Well the Honda CR-Z has just been rated one of Europe’s safest cars, achieving a maximum 5-stars in the latest independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP.

Euro NCAP’s rating scheme focuses on the vehicle’s overall safety performance which gives consumers an easy to understand single score. The system considers occupant protection in frontal, side, pole and rear impacts, child protection, pedestrian protection and the availability of driver aids.

The rating scheme uses a weighted score, combining many aspects of a car’s safety performance: adult (50%), child (20%) and pedestrian (20%) protection assessment results with the availability of safety assistance devices (10%). To qualify for inclusion, safety assistance devices must be fitted as standard across 90% of the EU 27 2010 model range.

And when it comes down to the Honda CR-Z

Vehicle Stability Assist
Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking assistance to any of the wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.

Braking
Ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes ensure road stability, which is further enhanced by the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE)
The ACE body structure is a Honda exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. The ACE design utilises a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.

This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.

Pedestrian Protection
The CR-Z also incorporates many features designed with pedestrian-protection in mind. Research has shown that these features can dramatically improve a pedestrian’s chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle. Features include windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges, as well as an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

Airbags and Seatbelts
On all models in the range, the driver and passenger Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) front and side airbags are complemented by full length curtain airbags to protect all occupants. There are three-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts in all seating positions, the front seatbelts also have two stage Energy Absorption (EA) load limiting pre-tensioners.

Active headrests
The CR-Z is equipped with front seat active headrests which reduce the likelihood of neck injury in rear impacts. As the occupant is pushed against the seat back, a rigid plate in the seat presses a link to the headrest pushing it up and forward to support the head.

The Honda CR-Z is the world’s first six-speed manual transmission hybrid car and in the first month 40% of the of all Honda CR-Z sales were for the manual transmission.

The Honda CR-Z also comes with a unique 3-Mode Drive System that maximises a driver’s choice and enhances the driving experience.

Honda was planning on annual global sales of between 40,000 and 50,000 CR-Z models but that’s a figure that now looks as though it needs to be revised upwards.

Despite the fact that the Honda Insight is yet to arrive in Australia it’s already attracting a lot of attention overseas and it’s one of three finalists for the 2010 World Green Car award, to be announced at the New York International Auto Show on 1 April, 2010.

The winner of last year’s award was the Honda FCX Clarity.

The World Green Car awards began in 2004 to recognise and reward automotive excellence on an international scale. Judging criteria for the 2010 World Green Car award included: fuel consumption; exhaust emissions; and use of a major advanced power plant technology (beyond engine componentry) aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle’s environmental responsibility.

Each candidate for the award was extensively reviewed by three green experts appointed by the World Car Steering Committee: Sam Abuelsamid, representing North America; Dean Slavnich, representing Europe; and Tadashi Tateuchi, representing Asia.

The second-generation Honda Insight represents over 20 years of hybrid development with its primary aim to make hybrid technology more affordable for more people.

The lightweight, compact hybrid system combines exceptional fuel economy with CO2 emissions of just 101g/km. The vehicle features a 1.3-litre i-VTEC engine, as well as Honda’s proprietary Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) and Ecological Drive Assist System.

Previous awards won by the Honda Insight include winner of the 2009 UK Environmental Transport Association (ETA) Green Car Awards and 2009 Top Safety Pick by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Honda Accord and CR-V have been named in Kiplinger’s 2010 ‘Best in Class’ awards in the U.S, with the Accord taking Best in Class in the US$25,000 – $30,000 price range and the CR-V named Best in Class: Small Crossover.

The V6 Honda Accord won its price range category for the third year in a row, with editors nominating the vehicle’s impressive reliability, comfortable ride, standard safety equipment and ‘powerful yet thrifty’ driving approach as key selling points.

One of the first models introduced to Australia, the Accord is the most highly decorated vehicle in Honda’s history. It was the first Japanese car to win the coveted ‘Wheels Car of the Year’ award during its first year in Australia and was more recently named 2008 Drive Car of the Year and Large Car of the Year.

It was an impressive debut for the JAS Motorsport built, Mugen powered, Tankformers backed Evans Motorsport Honda Civic Type R.

On Friday’s first leg over two competitive stages, Evans and Weston finished first and second to end the day second overall by just 0.3 of a second.

Confidence was high for a good result on Saturday’s second leg which covered eight stages. Despite problems with the championship control tyres, Eli still managed to grab a stage win, as well as a second and third place on two other stages in the morning. However as the day progressed the tyre situation became critical, and after a quick off-road excursion Evans backed off.. As a result he ended the day in eighth place.

The weather was cooler on Sunday for leg three and Evans was able to attack the eight stages with renewed vigour.

Over the first six stages the Tankformers Honda Civic Type R won three and placed second in the other three. At the start of the final stage, run around the streets of Burnie, the gear lever broke as Evans grabbed second gear off the line. Unable to change gears Evans cruised through the stage resulting in a slow time.

Eli Evans, Glen Weston and the Evans Motorsport team were delighted with the strong showing of the Honda Civic Type R, clearly demonstrating its winning potential, collecting 50 championship points and instantly becoming the crowd favourite.

Now the 2010 Honda Cr-V looks set to continue that reputation and it sets a new specification level and reduced costs.

Heading the list of new features is the addition of curtain airbags on the entry model; now every CR-V in the range has dual front, side and full-length curtain airbags as standard.

The CR-V’s exterior styling comes with distinctive new bumpers, an evolution of the two-step grille, revised exterior mirrors to further reduce wind noise, chrome exhaust tip and new design alloy wheels on both the Sport and Luxury models.

The CRV’s smooth ride and handling has been further improved with changes to the front castor angles and compliances bushes at the rear.

NVH levels are lower, with extra sound deadening around the engine bay and throughout the entire cabin, adding to the high-quality refinement of the CR-V while making it even quieter and more relaxing to drive.

The ‘Active’ pack which includes Bluetooth, Side steps, Roof racks, Deluxe mats, Cargo protector tray, Chrome exhaust tip, side window visors, door sill garnish and dust and pollen filter.

The ‘Modulo Sports’ features side steps, front skid plate, rear skid plate, Tailgate spoiler, Sports grille, Chrome exhaust tip and chrome mirror covers.

Both packs sell for $2,699 including fitting.

The CR-V’s colour palette has been expanded to six colours including two new additions, Urban Titanium and Habenero Red.

In addition to the specification upgrades, pricing of the 2010 CRV range is more compelling, offering customers even greater value for money.

Prices for the 2010 Honda Cr-V start at $30,990 plus dealer deliver charges and on-road costs for the Standard version fitted with manual transmission and run right up to $43,265 plus dealer deliver charges and on-road costs for the Luxury model fitted with automatic transmission and metallic paint.

Here is Honda’s official statement on the recall of Honda Accord and Honda CR-V vehicles:

Honda Australia has expanded a recent recall of 1,323 vehicles produced in 2001 and 2002 by a further 703 units, to replace the driver’s airbag inflator.

The total number of vehicles subject to this worldwide expansion is 437,763 units.

Based on Honda’s ongoing investigation and analysis, the recall was expanded to include a further 514,355 units in North America, Japan and other regions since November 2008 and June 2009, although there have been no incidents of airbag failure reported for vehicles included this time.

SITUATION:
Some of the compressed inflator propellant* located inside the inflator of the driver’s SRS airbag was defective. As a result, when the driver’s airbag is deployed in the event of an accident or under other circumstances, there is a possibility that an abrupt increase in the inflator’s internal pressure may rupture the casing of the inflator and cause fragments of airbag parts to scatter possibly causing injury to vehicle occupants.

BACKGROUND:
First measure
1) As the result of our investigation based on incidents that occurred in the U.S. after February 2007, we identified the cause of the problem as excessive moisture intake by the compressed inflator propellant within the inflator. Based on this conclusion, in November 2008, we issued a recall notification in the U.S. and Canada.

* Total: 4,205 units (3,940 units in the U.S., 218 units in Canada, 47 units in Mexico)

Second measure
2) We continued our analysis as there were additional incidents involving vehicles outside of the range of the original recall. In order to prevent the same incidents from occurring in the future, we decided to expand the range and issued a second recall notification in the U.S. and Canada on June 30, 2009. A recall notification was issued for the first time in Japan on July 29, 2009.

* Total: 510,150 units (443,727 units in the U.S., 49,452 units in Canada, 1,532 units in Japan, 15,439 units in other counties)

Latest measure
3) As a result of our continued investigation, we identified that there is a possibility that the defect occurs when the stamping pressure during the production of the compressed inflator propellant is not high enough. And we concluded that the fact that adequate stamping pressure management was not performed for production of the compressed inflator propellant using a certain stamping machine was the cause of the problem. Therefore, we decided to expand the recall to include all vehicles using compressed inflator propellant produced with this particular equipment.

ACTION TO BE TAKEN:
The inflator in the driver’s SRS airbag of vehicles subject to this recall will be replaced with a non-defective inflator in all affected regions/countries.

This expanded recall broadens the scope to include all compressed inflator propellant which was produced using equipment that experienced a problem. Therefore, based on our understanding, this action would rule out the possibility of the same incident occurring in the future.

It seems that the faulty power window switch was not fitted to any Honda Jazz vehicles sold in Australia.

Usually it’s nothing very interesting at all but look what rolled out of one dull red shipping container in Melbourne earlier this month.

It’s an Italian J.A.S Motorsport-built Honda Civic Type R and Honda have brought it into Australia sot that Eli Evans can have another tilt at the Australian Rally Championships.

The first round of the championship is being held in Tasmania from February 26 to 28.

The Jazz includes many features of a bigger car – load space, driving feel, high-spec equipment – and the benefits of excellent fuel economy, low emissions and the modest running costs of a small car.

“The latest version of the Honda Jazz picks up where the previous model left off as a very desirable used car,” said Kieren Puffett, Editor at Parker’s.

“A combination of incredible flexibility for a vehicle of its size, the interior space of a much larger car and low running costs make it just as appealing to used car buyers as it does to those choosing new. It proved to be the safest investment on four wheels during 2009,” Mr Puffett said.

Parker’s annual survey compared the current, private resale value of almost 300 model ranges [in good condition with 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometres) on the clock] to the price of a new vehicle 12 months earlier.

The index showed that small cars experienced the lowest depreciation value, with models in this class making up 35 of the top 40 places in the survey.

Since its debut in October 2002, the Honda Jazz has sold more than 64,000 units in Australia. The economical light hatch is one of Honda Australia’s most popular models

It is a unique hybrid car, combining the advantages of an efficient petrol-electric hybrid engine with a 6-speed manual transmission in a stylish coupe body. Honda wants this car to change current perceptions of hybrids, with its driver-focussed chassis and responsive engine assisted by the IMA parallel hybrid system.

The CR-Z ‘s exterior is designed around a ’One-Motion Wedge’ concept with a low bonnet line and wide track, giving the car an athletic look. Signature Honda design features including the split-level rear glass hatch and raked roofline have been referenced in the design then combined with a curvaceous and deeply sculpted exterior form.

For the first time, a parallel hybrid system is combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The new CR-Z teams a conventional manual gearbox with a petrol-electric drivetrain for the first time since the 5-speed 2003 Civic IMA (not sold in Australia) and is possible only because of Honda’s flexible IMA parallel hybrid system.

The manual transmission is connected to a 1.5 litre 4-cylinder engine and is a key component in the CR-Z’s unique character. The revvy nature of the engine is enhanced with an additional 78 Nm of torque provided by the 10kW electric motor, located between the engine and transmission.

The 1.5 litre engine combined with the power and torque of the IMA parallel hybrid system gives an overall power output of 91kW and 174 Nm of torque. The peak torque figure is identical to that of the 1.8-litre Civic and with 35 g/km lower CO2 emissions of just 117 g/km*.

The electric motor gives the CR-Z an unusually flat torque curve with the maximum achieved at 1500 rpm, unusually low for a naturally aspirated engine. Teamed with a 6-speed manual transmission, the IMA assisted engine provides great in-gear flexibility, excellent exhaust emissions.

To maximise driver choice and enhance the driving experience, the CR-Z has been fitted with a 3-Mode Drive System. This unique feature allows the driver to choose between three driving modes, which alter the responses of the throttle, steering, idle stop timing, climate control and the level of assistance provided by the IMA system.

In developing this 3-Mode Drive System, Honda is giving drivers the choice to maximise enjoyment, economy or strike a balance between the two. Honda’s engineers wanted to give customers more choices in how the CR-Z would drive, depending on their needs and desires at the time.

The shallow raked roofline and short tail of the CR-Z is a feature shared with other Hondas, past and present. This design creates minimal disturbance, lowering fuel consumption and therefore emissions.

The interior has been developed from the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show CR-Z Concept, with its 3D displays and driver focussed cabin. The high-technology instrument binnacle places all of the commonly used controls close to the driver’s hands, allowing full concentration on driving at all times.

The dashboard has a two-level construction, with a dark upper portion appearing to float above a light grey lower dash section, which continues into the inner door panels.

Driver enjoyment was the core of the design brief and character of the CR-Z. The platform shares some components with the Insight, but the wheelbase, track width and set-up are all bespoke for the new hybrid. Forged aluminium MacPherson struts have been used in the CR-Z to reduce weight and increase strength over the pressed steel items used in the Insight.

Overall, the CR-Z has a 115 mm shorter wheelbase and is 295mm shorter in overall length than the Insight, enhancing agility and reducing kerb weight by 44 kg compared to its 5-door, five-seat, family car cousin. The CR-Z’s suspension features unique spring and damper settings and tolerances.

And why should the Honda CR-V be so popular? Well from our experience it’s rugged, reliable and comfortable too … and it can also get into some fairly rough country despite the fact that it’s only an all-wheel drive. While the CR-V in the photo is on some fairly flat ground when I took the photo the climb up into the hills above Copeton Dam near Inverell was quite rough.

Following the introduction of Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) across the entire Honda Civic sedan range in February 2009, Honda Australia has now added curtain airbags as standard equipment on the entry model Civic VTi sedan with the introduction of the 2010 Year Model.

All 2010 Civic sedans are fitted with the latest safety technology, starting with the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, ABS Brakes with EBD, active front head restraints, dual front, side and curtain airbags and Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) as standard.

The exterior styling is intended to capture a future direction for premium sophistication while balancing the need for maximum interior space and an aerodynamic appearance. The interior layout, in conjunction with the rear powertrain design, contributes prominently to the exterior’s overall shape.

The layout of the interior space, with its centre driving position flanked by two rear seats, provides generous legroom for all occupants, roughly the equivalent of a mid-sized sedan in a vehicle that has an exterior footprint similar to a micro car.

Interior functionality is increased by rear seating areas that fold up and out of the way to increase storage capacity. The windscreen serves as a heads-up display for the navigation system and the back-up camera.

The modular rear engine bay, depicted on the exterior by blue composite material, is designed to accommodate a wide variety of potential propulsion technologies including a conventional small displacement internal combustion engine, a hybrid petrol-electric powertrain, or a battery-electric powertrain.

“The objective of the exterior and interior designers was to explore the potential for a new type of small-segment-category vehicle that overcomes many of the objections for existing micro-car designs,” said Marek.

The Advanced Design Studio of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Los Angeles developed the P-NUT design study model. Honda R&D Americas began its operations in California in 1975 with local market research activities and has steadily grown its capabilities over the past 33 years to include all aspects of new vehicle research, design and development.

This is the latest and it’s definitely worth a look.

That’s an interesting move because it’s Formula One presence is a big part of Honda’s current marketing here in Australia.

The FCX Clarity is powered by an electric motor that draws its power from a fuel cell that converst hydrogen and oxygen into electricty. Additional power is passed to a lithium-ion battery pack through regenerated energy when the vehicle is braking.

With a range of only 432 km and a need for specialised refueling stations it’s unlikely that we’ll see the Honda FCX Clarity here in Australia any time soon but perhaps one day these, and other, emission free vehicles will be on our roads.

Even someone who happened to be looking over my shoulder as I prepared the images wanted to know more about this classy looking 2008 Honda Accord.

There were a number of concept cars at the recent Los Angeles Motor Show and American Honda had their own styling concept car on display.

According to Honda “the REMIX explores the shape and design of a two-seat sports car focused on agile and fun-to-drive performance that can also provide exceptional practicality as a daily driver.”

The Honda Remix is a product of Honda’s Advanced Design Studio in Southern California. Purely a design concept, the vehicle is fashioned around a front-wheel drive small car platform with a 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. A sport suspension, along with aggressive tires and brakes, further supplement its performance side.”

The vehicle certainly wouldn’t please everyone but there’s something in the design that just appeals to me.

For some reason the rear of the Honda Remix reminds me of the Honda Civic wagon from the late 1980s.
