Flywheel Technology for Cars

Volvo flywheel technology for carsFlywheels have been around in toy cars ever since I was an ankle-biter but flywheel technology for cars … as a form of propulsion … has not been something that most car makers have done more than think about.

However flywheel technology for cars has been something that has been exercising the minds of various Volvo engineers for quite some time. As far back as the 1980s Volvo was experimenting with flywheel propulsion in a 260 and steel was the material of choice back then and weight was the major problem.

Of course since then new and lighter materials have become available and right now Volvo is experimenting with flywheels made from carbon fibre and weighs in at just 6kg and we’re not talking about something that takes up a whole lot of room either … Volvo’s flywheel technology for cars uses a flywheel that is just 20 centimetres in diameter.

It might be lightweight and it might be small but the fuel savings that this technology is delivering is impressive. When combined with a 4-cylinder turbo engine Volvo’s flywheel technology reduces fuel consumption by up to 25% when compared to a similar vehicle powered by a 6-cylinder engine and delivers an extra 80 horsepower.

How it works
Volvo’s flywheel technology for cars allows the normal engine to power the front wheels while the flywheel powers the rear wheels through a specially designed transmission.

The flywheel operates within a vacuum to ensure minimum friction and during braking the engine is turned off and the flywheel can spin at up to 60,000 revolutions per minute. Energy from the flywheel is stored.

When the vehicle begins to move again the flywheel’s stored energy is transferred to the rear axle and is sufficient to power the car for short periods and when that energy is depleted the engine cuts in and takes over powering the car.

This type of technology is best suited for the stop start driving that you normally encounter in urban areas and Volvo believes that it’s possible to have the engine turned off for around half the driving time.

While the economics of flywheel technology for cars is going to appeal to lots of drivers it’s also going to appeal those who like to make a fast getaway from the lights. Flywheel technology delivers fast acceleration … so fast that the time it takes to accelerate from a standing start to 100km/h is cut by seconds.

Volvo is yet to announce when their flywheel technology for cars will begin to appear in their petrol and diesel models some of the technology has already found its way into Volvo’s second series C30 electric car.

The Car That Parks Itself

Autonomous driving - the car that parks iteselfVolvo call it autonomous parking … it’s a package that they now have in a concept car … but in every day terms what Volvo have developed is the car that parks itself.

Not only will the car park itself but the driver doesn’t even have to be in the car … watching the car … or even thinking about the car for that matter … while it is parking itself. The driver doesn’t even have to find a parking spot because the car will do it for him or her.

And it doesn’t matter that the driver doesn’t know exactly where the car is located because when the driver wants to leave and drive somewhere else the car will come to the driver. At all times when the car that parks itself is in autonomous mode … i.e. without the driver in control or even in the car … the car is interacting with itse surrounds via sensors that detect stationary and moving objects around it.

Speed and braking are all governed by that is safe in the environment around the car.

While this all sounds like the sort of automotive technology that is years away it’s coming in 2014. Volvo currently plants to incorporate a small part of this technology … autonomous steering … in the 2014 XC90 model.

Mitsubishi MiEV Goes to Pikes Peak

mitsubishi-MiEV-IIWhen we think of Mitsubishi and electric vehicles it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking about their little urban runabout … the i-MiEV … but there’s a lot more to Mitsubishi electric cars than that and this year we’re about to see something a whole lot bigger take on Pikes Peak.

Pikes Peak is the internationally famous hill climb track in Colorado and this year Mitsubishi wants to do better than the second place in the Electric Division that they achieved last year. This year they’re aiming for overall first place.

To achieve that outcome Mitsubishi are taking their MiEV Evolution II to the Peak and it’s going with specially designed high-output motors powered by high-capacity battery.

All that power will be controlled by S-AWC (Mitsubishi’s acronym for super all-wheel control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system that will control a front and rear drive train with a motor for each wheel which obviously makes this a 4WD.

Along with the S-AWC the Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution II comes with active yaw control to give the vehicle added cornering capability … active stability control that automatically controls brake force to each wheel.

There’s no doubt that it’s a serious piece of machinery that can really accelerate … but when you watch the video of the final tests before Mitsubishi shipped their MiEV Evolution II off to America there’s one thing missing.

There’s just no engine noise … there’s no roaring exhaust … nothing terribly exciting at all … but it sure does go.

Holden Malibu 2013

Holden MalibuHolden first announced that the Chevy Malibu was first coming to Australia back in 2011 and finally it’s just about here. In fact it’s so close to arriving in the showrooms that Holden have announced pricing and equipment levels.

The Holden Malibu as it will appear in Australia is a Korean-built  four-door, front-wheel drive sedan powered by a 2.4 litre petrol or 2.0 litre diesel engine.

It will be available in two equipment levels … the entry level will be the Malibu CD and the top of the range will be the Malibu CDX.

Pricing will start at $28,490 for the entry level petrol Malibu CD and at the other end of the scale pricing for the Malibu CDX diesel will start at $35,990.

All prices are manufacturer’s recommended price and on-road costs and government charges are extra.

The body

The Holden Malibu is 4865mm long, 1855mm wide (excluding the mirrors) and it stands 1465mm high. The wheelbase is 2737mm with a front track of 1583mm and a rear track of 1585mm. Luggage capacity is 545 litres and fuel capacity is 73 litres.

Kerb weights for the CD are 1583kg for the petrol version and 1659kg for the diesel while the CDX weights in at 1610kg for the petrol and 1684kg for the diesel.

The engine

The Korean-built petrol engine is a 2.4 litre DOHC 16-valve, 4-cylinder unit that develops 123kW of power at 5800 rpm and 225 Nm of torque at 4600 rpm. It features an aluminium engine block and cylinder head.

Cam phasers for both intake and exhaust valves are also fitted as are digital sensors to provide greater precision in the data supplied to the onboard processor. Deep inside the engine there are oil-cooling jets to ensure optimal piston cooling and they will also give added long-term durability.

Fuel consumption figures for the petrol engine on a combined cycle are 8.0L/100km and CO2 emissions are 192g/km

The German built diesel engine is a 2.0 litre common rail turbo. It features an electronically controlled turbocharger complete with intercooler that lowers fuel consumption and emissions and a diesel particulate filter system that Holden says will be maintenance-free for the life of the vehicle.

Fuel consumption figures for the diesel engine on a combined cycle are 6.4L/100km for the CD and 6.5L/100km for the CDX. CO2 emissions for the CD are 170g/km and 172g/km for the CDX.

Transmission

Both the CD and CDX diesel and petrol versions are fitted with a 6-speed Gen 2 automatic transmission with Active Select. There is no manual version available.

Steering and Suspension

Although this version of the Malibu is built in Korea it will come with a specially tuned suspension for Australian conditions that includes a McPherson Strut with lower ‘L’ arm as well as aluminium alloy front knuckles and lower control arm.

The diesel version of the Holden Malibu comes with hydraulic power steering while the petrol version has electric power steering.

Safety

The Holden Malibu comes with all the usual safety features, ESC, ABS, EBD, traction control, brake assist, 6 airbags, energy absorbing steering column, three-point seat belts in all seating positions, and a brake pedal that breaks away in an accident.

All models are fitted with a reversing camera and rear parking sensors as standard.

The brakes on the petrol version of the Holden Malibu 16″ ventilated discs on the front and solid discs on the rear while the diesel version comes with 17″ ventilated discs front and rear.

Both Malibu models feature sensor key technology and push-button start as well as auto headlights. Rain sensing wipers are standard on the CDX models.

Interior

The Holden Malibu comes with power height adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger as standard. The front seats are heated … standard on the CDX … and offer a choice of three heating levels.

Holden’s MyLink Infotainment system is standard across the range and features a 7″ full-colour touch-screen, the usual radio/DC capability, audio streaming via Bluetooth, phone integration and phone book support as well as Pandora and Stitcher apps.

One interesting feature of the Holden Malibu is the multiple hidden storage compartments in the passenger compartment … including one behind the touch-screen. These are easily accessible for people inside the car but effectively hide items from prying eyes outside the car.

It will be interesting to watch the sales of the Holden Malibu. Will the demand be there right from the start and continue on … or will we see a repeat of the initial high demand and then drop-off that we saw in the Holden Cruze?

Toyota Camatte57s Concept

Toyota Camatte57s concept carWell here’s a concept car with a difference. While many concept cars tend to end up looking like kiddie’s cars the Toyota Camatte57s Concept was designed to be exactly that.

This concept was built with the idea of providing an opportunity for parents and children to experience the fun of driving and car customisation together.

The body is made up of57 lightweight panels that are all detachable to allow for quick colour and design customisation and a roadster design was chosen to give better all-round visibility and to let kids of all ages to enjoy the feeling the wind in their hair.

Seating is in the form of a triangle and Toyota have used that arrangement to allow children to be supervised more closely as they drive the vehicle.

Yes, Toyota has designed this concept to be operated by children as well as adults and both the accelerator and the brake pedal can be adjusted so that children can reach them. Any adult sitting in the rear-right seat will also have access to the brake and to the steering wheel.

Don’t expect to see this car on Australian roads any time soon but do expect to see more examples of cars that their owners can customise. Toyota already has the Rukus in the showrooms and that’s been designed for customisation.

2013 Toyota RAV4

new 2013 toyota rav4There’s a new Toyota RAV4 on its way to Australia in the first quarter of 2013 and it’s bringing three new engines with it.

Actually it’s about time Toyota did something about the engine in the RAV4 … the current petrol engine has always seemed to be a little heavy on fuel for a vehicle of the RAV4′ size and the lack of a diesel has been a little hard to understand.

However all that is about to change with a new range of engines that includes a 2.2-litre 4 cylinder turbo-charged common-rail diesel, a 2.5-litre 133kW 4 cylinder petrol engine similar to the engine currently fitted to the Camry Altise and a 2.0-litre 102kW petrol engine similar to the engine fitted to the Corolla Ultima sedan.

Toyota haven’t yet said what the fuel consumption figures will be for the petrol versions but they say that fuel consumption figures for the diesel version will  dip ” below 6.0 litres/100km”.

Transmissions
The standard transmission for all three engines will be a 6 speed manual box.

A 6 speed auto is available for the diesel and the 2.5-litre petrol version and the 2.0-litre petrol version is available with Toyota’s MultiDrive Sport CVT 7 speed sequential manual box.

Body changes
A look at the accompanying photos will show any body changes that Toyota has planned but one that may not be so apparent, even though it’s glaringly obvious once it’s pointed out is the change to the rear of the Toyota RAV4. The spare wheel has disappeared … it has been moved to under the cargo floor and a one-piece tailgate that hinges at the roof has been added.

The new Toyota RAV4 will come with seven airbags, an improved driving position, better all-round vision and an advanced all-wheel drive system.

Premium features
Top of the range variants of the new Toyota RAV4 will get a power-operated tailgate, blind-spot monitor, rain-sensing wipers and an electro-chromatic rear vision mirror.

It’s hard to believe that the Toyota RAV4 has been around since 1994 but it has and almost 200,000 of them have been sold in Australia since then. If looks are anything to go by the new RAV4 will certainly be just as popular as all the models that have gone before it.

2012 Series II Holden Captiva 7 LX Review

2012 Holden Captiva 7 LXThis is the second Holden Captiva we have had for review and I have to say that I approached it with some trepidation. The original Holden Captiva we tested was one of the first Captiva models to hit the market and to put it bluntly … we were not impressed.

It may have been the particular vehicle we had for the test but that first Captiva left us with some negative feelings about the vehicle that were definitely hard to shake off.

However the 2012 6-cylinder Series II Captiva 7 undid all those negative memories. That’s not to say that the Series II Captiva 7 is perfect … only one of the three drivers associated with Aussie Motoring that drove it was impressed … but in our estimation it is definitely a huge leap forward when compared to the first Captiva.

The vehicle we had for this test was the top of the range 6-cylinder Series II Holden Captiva 7 LX and the only option on the vehicle that we could identify was a factory-fitted towbar.

If you’re coming from a small car … one of our drivers regularly drives a Corolla … then the size of the Captiva 7 may catch you by surprise. It’s easy to think of this vehicle as being fairly compact … from the outside it does look that way … but once you’re in the driver’s seat you begin to realize that it’s a little bigger than you thought.

What we liked about the Captiva
All drivers were impressed by the visibility. You get such a good view from the driver’s seat that you tend to forget that the vehicle does have a nose that projects some way beyond the windscreen.

The sideview mirrors are big and they really do give you a good view of what’s on the left and right of the vehicle. The main rearview mirror also gives you a good view of what’s behind you and on the test vehicle it was fitted with auto-dimming so idiots with high-beam and/or fog lights aren’t as much of a nuisance as they might otherwise be.

The Series II Holden Captiva LX is also fitted with a reversing camera and it really does give you a great view of what’s behind you when you’re reversing. The image is displayed in the large screen at the top of the centre stack and that really does get a big tick of approval from me. I see no point in displaying a reversing camera image in the rearview mirror where light and reflection tend to make it hard to see.

The front seats that caused us so much discomfort in the first Captiva we tested were comfortable and provided plenty of adjustment. Tall drivers will have no problems … but you wouldn’t want to be a passenger in the second row of seats if the driver and passenger are tall. There’s not much legroom if the front seats are as far back as they can go.

The layout of the dashboard was also quite good and you’re not overwhelmed with irrelevant information. You get all the information you need and if you want more it’s not hard to find it but it’s just not there in your face.

With the third row of seats folded flat there’s 465 litres of luggage space and 930 litres with both rows of seats folded down.  There are also several places where you can tie down or secure anything you might be carrying in the back so some people might find that the Series II Captiva 7 could double as a delivery vehicle.

Pulling the third row of seats up after they have been folded flat was a breeze … it’s a pity the same thing couldn’t be said about the second row of seats.

Things we didn’t like about the Captiva
When are Australians going to lose their fascination with leather seats? All three drivers had the same opinion after driving the Captiva on relatively mild days up here in Queensland.

If you’ve got hemorrhoids there’s a quick way to get rid of them if you happen to own any vehicle that has leather seats. Go park it in the sun for a couple of hours and then sit on the leather seat and you’ll burn the hemorrhoids off … it might be bloody painful but it’s faster than the other option.

Scary urban fuel consumption figures

Fuel consumption was a major cause of unhappiness among the drivers. The 6-cylinder Series II Holden Captiva 7 has a 3.0-litre SIDI direct injection V6 engine coupled to a 6-speed auto transmission that on our vehicle had a truly frightening thirst. The transmission comes with a choice of standard or Eco mode and even though we spent most of our time driving it in Eco mode the fuel consumption figures were not good.

Holden says that you can expect to get 10.1L/100km on a combined cycle. Our best figures were in the mid to high 13s around town and the mid 10s on the highway no matter how conservatively we drove.

And to top that off we found the Captiva to be sluggish regardless of which mode we were operating in.  We did think that with a 6-cylinder engine the vehicle would have been fairly lively but that wasn’t the case in the text vehicle.

Gear changes in the auto box were good but the vehicle we tested seemed to have a noisy dislike for driving at a steady consistent speed when it was in Eco mode. There was plenty of whirring and whining coming from the transmission … although you probably wouldn’t hear it if you had the sound system running.

No one seemed to like the access to the third row of seats either. Of course that access is going require someone to fold part of the second row forward while people are climbing into the back but the second row of seats don’t slide forward so access is cramped and folding the second row back into position was not easy because the seats are heavy.

And then there are the proximity sensors … well not so much the sensors as the noise they make. The warning buzzer is on by default so every time you turn the ignition on in a crowded garage or parking area the buzzer will sound. Of course you can turn it off but as soon as you select reverse the buzzer is activated again.

One driver didn’t see that as much of a problem … perhaps her garage is neat and tidy … but that buzzer drove the other driver and me crazy.

Like all modern vehicles the Series II Holden Captiva has a number of controls on the steering wheel and most of them are quite visible and easy to use. However there are four controls … two on each side … that are actually mounted out of sight on the side/rear of the steering wheel and two of them are part of the cruise control.

Those controls were so out of sight that none of us ever engaged cruise control despite the fact that a lot of the distance we covered in the Captiva was highway driving.

The Series II Holden Captiva 7 comes with big screen satellite navigation system that’s easy to see and understand but sadly it’s years out of date for anything north of Brisbane. Speed limits were wrong … too high in some places and too low in others … and you wouldn’t want to rely on this system if you’re looking for a service station and thinking you might be able to get a little further before you had to stop for fuel.

The bottom line
One of our three drivers … a young professional thinking of starting a family … and looking for a new vehicle put this on her short list. The other two thought that for a vehicle worth in excess of $40k it was a little lacking.

Look around at other vehicles in the same category and you may find something better for less although you may not find anything better if you really do need that extra row of seats.

Mahindra Pik Up Crash Test

Yesterday’s announcement by the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia that they would only insure and finance vehicles that have been rated by ANCAP with 4 or 5 stars (reported here) could have some interesting ramifications for automotive sales in Australia.

If other insurance and finance companies follow suit then you can say goodbye to a number of brands that are trying to establish a foothold here. At least one Chinese brand has a range of vehicles on the market that rate no better than 3 stars and Indian manufacturer Mahindra has one that rates 4 stars while the Manindra Pik Up can only muster 3.

But don’t for a moment think that this is a problem faced by some of the fringe brands … the previous Isuzu D-Max ute could only muster 3 stars.

Big 4WD utes like the Mahnindra Pik Up may look sturdy but when it comes to keeping passengers safe some of them don’t do as good a job as you might think. Just look at what intrudes into the driver’s side of the cab in this Mahindra Pik Up crash test.

ANCAP Ratings and Car Insurance

There has been a very interesting development regarding car insurance that was announced today.

The Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RAC WA) have announced that from now on it will only insure or finance cars that have been rated by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) and awarded an ANCAP safety rating of either 4 or 5 stars.

The announcement applies to cars manufactured in 2012 and beyond and aims to encourage car buyers to check the ANCAP safety ratings before purchasing a new car because the RAC WA believes that when policy holders are driving safer vehicles there will be a significant effect on the road toll.

Whether or not this decision will be adopted by other insurers is yet to be seen but if it is we could see some Asian manufacturers disappear from the Australian market.

New Mitsubishi Outlander

new Mitsubishi OutlanderNovember 18 sees the release of the new Mitsubishi Outlander and while the body is far from exciting there are some interesting additions under the skin that are worth looking at not the least of which is a diesel six-speed auto.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander comes in three variants and starts with the entry-level ES, goes on to the mid-range LS and finishes with the luxury Aspire. The ES is only available as a 5-seater while the LS auto two-wheel drive is available as a 5-seater and all four-wheel drive versions of the LS and Aspire come as 7-seaters.

Engine and transmission
Two-wheel drive versions of the new Mitsubishi Outlander are fitted with the latest 2.0-litre Smart MIVEC engine that includes variable lift and timing control as well as ECO Drive Assistant Function and is coupled to either a 5-speed manual tranmission or a continuously variable auto transmission. The manual version will give you fuel economy of 7.0L/100km on a combined cycle while the auto gives a little better economy of 6.6L/100km.

The four-wheel drive version of the ES uses a 2.4-litrre MIVEC engine coupled to a continuosly variable auto transmission that delivers fuel economy of 7.5L/100km on a combined cycle.

The diesel six-speed auto combination will give you even better fuel economy of 5.8L/100km.
The two wheel drive option is available in both manual and automatic versions of the ES and the automatic version of the LS while four-wheel drive versions of the LS and Aspire are available in both automatic and manual versions.

Safety
Mitsubishi say that the new Outlander has been designed to “easily meet the regulations of ANCAP’s five-star rating” although they admit that the vehicle has yet to be tested.

There are seven airbags – driver and passenger, side and curtain as well as knee – standard across the range as is Active Stability Control. Reverse sensors and Hill-Start Assist is also fitted across the range along with ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.

There are some interesting new features that sadly are only offered as an option on the Aspire models. They include a Forward Collision Mitigation System that detects obstacles on the road ahead of the car and automatically applies the brakes and an Adaptive Cruise Control System that operates to maintain a safe distance between your car and the car in front and this works even at low speeds.

Other safety features that don’t appear until you buy the Aspire include rain-sensing wipers and dusk-sensing headlights.

A reversing camera is not available as standard on the ES but is standard on the LS. Other features such as dual-zone airconditioning are standard on the LS too.

Recommended retail pricing for the entry-level manual transmission two-wheel drive ES starts at $28,990. The LS is going to take a bigger bite out of your wallet with recommended retail pricing starting at $34,990 for the two-wheel drive version while the petrol version of the Aspire starts at $43,490 and the diesel.

Of course you have to add government and dealer-delivery charges to those prices to get the on-road cost and there are also some options that you can add to your vehicle that will also add to the bottom line.

Nissan Juke

Nissan Juke SUVThe Nissan Juke is coming to Australia. This is the small SUV that first saw the light of day back in 2008 as the Nissan  Qazana concept and you can see photos of that concept here in Aussie Motoring.

It’s actually quite interesting to compare those concept photos with the final production model.

In January 2010 Nissan announced that the Juke would go into production for sale in Europe and now … at last … it’s coming to Australia next year. (I guess when everyone else is offering a small SUV you just have to keep up with the competition.)

While Australian specs for the Nissan Juke SUV are still to be announced Nissan have told us that it will be available in all-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive versions. Look through the photos and you’ll see that the Juke SUV is quite a smart looking vehicle and not too far removed from the original concept.

Kia Track’ster

If you liked the look of the Kia Soul but were a little too embarrassed to drive such a sensitive-new-age-guy kind of car then Kia’s latest concept … the Kia Track’ster – might be more to your liking.It’s a Kia Soul given Kia’s US design studio’s treatment band now we have something that at least it looks like it has more grunt than sensitivity.

And you can have your first look at it at the Australian International Motor Show that opens this month.

While the original Kia Soul looked nice and friendly the Kia Track’ster has a snarl to it that makes it look positively fearsome and from any aspect the new Track’ster reeks of attitude with a capital ‘A’. But it’s definitely at the front where the attitude really grabs you were large LED driving lights frame a mouth that swallows great gulps of air.

The wheelbase of the Kia Track’ster concept has been stretched by 25.4mm compared to the Soul and brakes … 356mm Bembo vented and cross-drilled discs with six-piston calipers suggest that there’s going to be some power under the bonned … to go withg the attitude.

And there is some power hiding under the bonnet in the form of a turbo-charged 2.0-litre engine that puts out 186kW – 66% more that the current production Soul.

 

This is also just a 2-seat coupe with nothing but storage space behind them … something that is unlikely to see the light of day in a production version.

So will the Kia Track’ster concept translate into a production car? Kia says that there are “no firm plans to produce the Track’star” but I think that there are hints in the design … it’s not that futuristic … that suggest that we might see the Track’ster in production at some time not that far into the future.

New Hyundai Santa Fe

new Hyundai Santa FeThe all-new Hyundai Santa Fe is here and it certainly is worth taking a look at if a large SUV is is in your immediate future.

The new Santa Fe comes in three trim levels … at the bottom we have the Activ … a little further up the ladder we have the Elite … and right at the top we have the Highlander. Many people might think that buying the entry level Santa Fe could be a mistake because entry level vehicles … well they’re pretty basic aren’t they?

If that’s what you’re thinking the equipment levels of even the basic Active Santa Fe should be enough to make you think again. A 5-star safety rating is standard across the range … 7 airbags are standard across the range … a rear view camera is standard across the range … rear park assist is standard across the range as are automatic dusk sensing headlights, electric lumbar support for the driver, Advanced Traction Cornering and third row air-conditioning vents.

If you want things like Satnav, climate control air conditioning, glove box cooling, 12-way power driver’s seat and electrochromatic rear view mirror with compass you’ll want to start thinking about the Santa Fe Elite.

And if you really can’t live without a full-length glass sunroof, HD Xenon headlights, LED rear combination lights, powered front passenger seat and heated front and second row seats you won’t settle for anything less than the new Santa Fe Highlander.

Engine and transmissions
Regardless of which trim level you choose you also get a choice of two engines … the Theta II 2.4-litre GDi petrol engine  or the R-series 2.2-litre CRDi diesel engine. There’s also a choice of two transmissions … a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual box.

Around town both the manual and auto transmission coupled to the petrol engine will return 12.2 L/100km and 7.1 L/100km for highway conditions.  The diesel manual on the other hand returns 8.7 L/100km around town and 9.6 for the diesel automatic while for highway conditions the diesel manual returns 5.4 L/100km and 5.9 L/100km for the diesel automatic.

Advanced Traction Cornering Control
This new system is standard across the Hyundai Santa Fe range . It distributes torque via an electro-mechanical multi-place 2WD coupled that works in conjunction the Vehicle Stability Management system to anticipate traction requirements and deliver additional stability.

The system can transfer torque from front to rear and apply individual brakes to make pro-active adjustments to the torque delivery through each wheel.

The system continuously monitors and analyses data from the vehicle controller in relation to speed, throttle input, steering angle and yaw rate to determine power delivery front-to-rear and left-to-right.

This system operates in  the background and won’t be noticed by the driver.

Prices
Prices start at $36,990 for the 6-speed manual petrol Active and $39,990 for the diesel  and range up to $49,990 for the diesel Highlander – these prices do not include dealer delivery and government charges.

Would I buy one … well after driving the previous model for a week I would certainly take the time to have a serious look at the new Hyundai Santa Fe and the price is certainly very competetive.

Fiat Panda 4×4

Meet the Fiat Panda … the only A segment four-wheel drive or mini SUV … and if you’re not sure about what size is covered by the A segement then just think ‘very small’.

If you want measurements then the Fiat Panda 4×4 is just 3,680mm long … 1670mm wide and 1600mm high. The wheelbase is 2300mm. the front track is 1410mm and the rear track is 1400mm. Yes, it’s small but somehow Fiat have managed to build it as a 5-door and give it some  off-road capabilities.

Engine and transmission
The Fiat Panda 4×4 comes with a choice of two engines a new 85HP 0.9 TwinAir Turbo and the older 75HP 1.3 Multijet II diesel … yes there’s even a diesel for this tiny off-roader. Both engines are combined with a six-speed gearbox and what Fiat calls a “torque on demand” tranmission system with two diffs and electronically controlled coupling.

This is a permanent four-wheel drive system that analyses various signals to distribute traction to the front and rear diffs to ensure optimum traction.

No fuel consumption figures have been released yet but you would expect that a vehicle this size is not going to guzzle down huge amounts of fuel.

Suspension
Fiat’s engineers have juggled the need for passenger comfort with the need to be able to cope with off-road conditions so there’s basically nothing new in the suspension. At the front the Fiat Panda 4×4 has independent MacPherson suspension and an interconnected torsion beam layout at the rear.

The Fiat Panda 4×4 comes with electronic stability control and electronic locking differential and it rides on 15 inch rims.

Equipment levels
Equipment levels are what you would expect in this segment in this day and age. Manual climate control, a combination CD/MP3/radio, electric rear-view mirrors and remote central locking are all standard and there’s quite a range of options that you can add to the vehicle.

There’s no mention of prices for the Panda 4×4 yet … or if it will reach Australia … but I guess all will be revealed when it’s launched at the Paris Motor Show on Sept. 29

Exporting the Ford Territory

Ford Territory TitaniumWhile Toyota and Holden have been exporting quite a few cars for some years Ford here in Australia hasn’t appeared to be all that interested in pursuing export markets for their products.

In 2005 2300 Ford Territory vehicles were exported to South Africa and a small number were sent to Thailand that same year. Of course Ford has been exporting the Ford Territory to New Zealand ever since they first rolled off the production line and has sold around 12,00 there.

That’s not a huge number when you compare it to what Holden and Toyota are doing but it seems that Ford may be having another go at building a market in Thailand. Last week 100 top-of-the-range Ford Territory Titanium all-wheel-drive diesels were loaded on a car carrier in Melbourne.

While Ford is making all the right noises about being “excited” and receiving “strong interest” when they displayed a Territory at the Bangkok motor show in March it will be interesting to see if Ford really is committed to selling a vehicle into a foreign market that may go out of production when the next upgrade becomes due.

Peugeot 4008 SUV

Peugeot 4008 SUVI have to admit that after driving early model Renaults and Peugeots towards the end of my misspent youth I have a real soft spot for anything French that comes on four wheels.

I was particularly impressed by my Peugeot 404 wagon that could get me through just about any sort of terrain even though it was 2WD. Of course, being a quirky French vehicle it couldn’t get me up a hill without boiling but that’s another story.

So with my affection for French vehicles it’s no wonder that the compact Peugeot 4008 SUV caught my eye again when it was released in June … especially when the base model starts at just $28,990 (MLP).

I guess what also impresses me about the Peugeot 4008 is that while there is a 2WD version available there’s also a 4WD version and it’s not just an AWD masquerading as something off-road capability. Peugeot have even trimmed back the body to reduce overhang at the front and rear to enable it to tackle rougher terrain.

Peugeot offer two versions of the 4008 … the base model Active and the top of the range Allure.

The body
The photos say a whole lot more about the Peugeot 4008 than words can. This is an SUV that you’re not going to mistake for some other maker’s vehicle.

The body is 4.34m long and 1.8m wide with a wheelbase of 2.67m. The 4008 will carry 5 adults and 384 litres of luggage. Remove three of the adults, fold the back seats down, and you’ve got space for 1193 litres of luggage.

The base-grade model rides on 16 inch alloys while the top of the range rides on 18 inch and has chrome side sills.

The engine and transmission
Peugeot have opted to offer just one engine in the 4008 SUV and that’s a 2.0-litre four-cylinder , fuel injected petrol engine that produces 110kW of power and 197Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual box or a continuously variable auto transmission.

If you purchase the base model you have a choice of manual or automatic and 2WD or 4WD but the Allure is only available as a 4WD with automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption on a combined cycle for the 2WD version is 7.7L/100km and that rises to 8.1L/100km for the 4WD.

If you opt for the 4WD version of either the 4008 Active or the 4008 Allure you have the option of 2WD … on the front wheels … for normal road use, 4WD for when things get a little rough and when you need to dig in and get some traction there’s 4WD Lock.

In normal 4WD the distribution of power between the front and rear wheels is controlled so that most power goes to the front wheels while in 4WD Lock that distribution is reversed and up to 82% of the power is applied to the rear wheels.

Safety
The Peugeot 4008 comes with all the standard safety features you would expect in an SUV including electronic stability, anti-skid brakes and traction control. Emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution is also standard across the range.

Automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers are standard across the range as is cruise control, electronic rear park assistance and height adjustable driver’s seat.

Peugeot have also opted to fit the 4008 with a reversing camera that send images to a display in the rear-view mirror. Personally I find that a little disappoint because I am yet to find a rear-view mirror display that isn’t hampered by ambient light coming through the front windscreen.

When you have a windscreen full of glare it’s a little difficult to focus on a small image in the rear-view mirror.

Creature comforts
Reading through the specifications it can be a little hard to spot the differences between the base model Active and the Allure and anything that isn’t standard on the Active is available as an option.

Climate control air conditioning is available as standard across the range and that includes a cooled glove box and pollen filter.

Leather trim seating is not standard on the Active but it is an option

Pricing
The Active 2WD manual starts at $28,990 (MLP), $30,990 (MLP) for the 4WD manual and $38,490 (MLP) for the Allure. Auto transmission for the Active and paint upgrades for both variants are extra.

Toyota Dual Cab Landcruiser

There’s no doubt that demand for a dual cab Landcruiser has been around for years and it seems strange that, despite the popularity of dual cab 4×4 utes and growing demand for something similar in the their bigger 4WD range , Toyota left a dual cab out of the 70-Series lineup.

But now Toyota has finally got its act together and given in to demand from the mining industry and produced a dual cab 70-Series Landcruiser and Australia is going the first market in the world to  get the model.

The new Toyota dual cab 70-Series Landcruiser … designated the L79 … will come in two grades … the Workmate and the GXL.

Both the dual cab Workmate and the dual cab GXL will be powered by the same 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 that is standard across the L70 range. This engine features common-rail direct injection and an intercooler and it develops 151kW of power at 3,400rpm.

The diesel V8 is coupled to a five-speed manual box. As with others in the 70-Series the dual cab version will have part-time 4WD and a two-speed transfer case.

The Toyota dual cab Landcruiser will carry 5 adults and a one-tonne payload

Anti-skid braking is available on both versions and other refinements include BluetoothTM , audio streaming and voice-recognition phone and audio.

The dual cab Workmate will ride on 16-inch steel rims and be fitted with aluminium side steps, vinyl upholstery and floor mats. Diff locs will be an optional extra.

Prices for the Workmate will start at $63,990.

The Toyota dual cab Landcruiser GXL will ride on 16-inch alloy wheels and wheel-flares, remote central locking, diff locks, fog lamps, power windows, carpent and cloth seats will be standard.

Prices for the GXL will start at $67,990.

VW Amarok Auto and Single Cab Ute

vw amarok single cab uteWell if the numbers you see on the streets are anything to go by then the launch a while back of the VW Amarok has been a success and now VW are building on that success with a new automatic version and a single cab version for tradies.

The new auto
The move by VW to introduce a new automatic transmission to the Amarok dual-cab range with the new TDI420 diesel engine puts VW in the position of having the first ute in Australia with an 8-speed box. It also gives buyers a vehicle that is more agile and more fuel efficient.

The new automatic transmission is set up so that first gear is used for off-road use and towing while eighth gear functions as an overdrive and VW claim that these settings give the auto-equipped Amarok with permanent 4-wheel drive the same capability across all terrains as the manual version.

The new auto transmission also lowers fuel consumption to 8.3L/100km.

The VW Amarok single cab ute rides on the same chassis as the dual cab and gives buyers a cargo area that’s around 2,205mm in length … more than enough space for two pallets loaded sideways.

The single cab Amarok is available in rear-wheel drive (with optional diff-lock) or four-wheel drive with a choice of TSI300 petrol or TDI340 or TDI400 2.0-litre engines. A six-speed manual transmission is standard across the single cab range.

Carrying capacity ranges from 1,174kg to 1,349kg depending on the model and all versions have a rated towing capacity of 3 tonnes with 300kg of weight on the towball.

Safety
The VW Amarok single cab ute comes with a full suite of safety programmes including ABS and ESP, Brake Assist and a safety programme when going off road as standard as well as front, side and thorax airbags for driver and passenger.

The Amarok is also fitted with Hill Descent Assist and this holds the driving speed constant on steep descents by means of targeted brake actuations.

It seems that with the Amarok single cab ute VW have taken the humble tradies’ ute to a whole new level.

The New Ford EcoSport SUV

If you’re looking for a big booming V8 SUV that will double as a bulldozer or to a plow in your paddock the new Ford EcoSport … announced earlier this year … is definitely not for you.

In fact Ford doesn’t even pretend that the new EcoSport is anything other than an SUV designed for the urban environment. While there are some vague hints that the Ford EcoSport can handle something other than smooth tar Ford really does focus on the EcoSport being a town car for those who want to sit a little higher and drive something other than a mere car.

But that’s not to say the EcoSport is somehow lacking … or not a real SUV … because it certainly isn’t. It’s a vehicle that is definitely going to have a big market appeal in third-world countries … and more affluent countries … like Australia … too.

Sure, the EcoSport was first launched in India and then in China but Ford is focused on selling this compact SUV throughout the world and they have stated that it will be offered “in nearly 100 markets globally”. In fact you could describe this version of the Ford EcoSport as a truly global vehicle because it was designed in Brazil and will be built in India, China, and Thailand and the capacity of the plants where it will be built is enough to supply a global demand.

So at some stage it’s quite likely that we can expect to see the Ford EcoSport here in Australia so what can we expect?

The body
The Ford EcoSport SUV is built on Ford’s new B-class platform and features what Ford describes as “high torsional stiffness and high levels of protection for occupants”. Ford says that it will seat five … although you have to wonder just how big some of those five could be.

Ground clearance is good  … far more than you would see in a town car… and the vehicle also has what Ford describes as “integrated lower body cladding for robustness”. The spare wheel is attached to a swing gate at the rear of the vehicle.

The interior
You would expect a vehicle like this to have fairly spartan creature comforts but that may not be the case … even at the entry level. Seats will be upholstered in “soft-touch” materials and “Ice Blue” lighting will be featured.

At the upper end of the comfort scale you can expect to find Ford SYNC with voice control, keyless entry, Ford Power Start and even a cooled bin in the glovebox.

Safety
The Ford EcoSport SUV will come with a reasonable suite of safety features including dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, ABS, ESP, Hill Launch Assist and rear parking sensors as well as electric power-assisted steering.

Obviously a few of those features are going to be restricted to the top of the range EcoSport and by the time the vehicle reaches Australia there could be even more safety features included.

The engine
The EcoSport SUV has been designed to take a variety of engines and transmissions but In Asia and China it will be fitted with Fords all-new three cylinder, 1.0-litre turbo-charged and fuel injected engine mated to a five-speed gearbox. Ford claims that this engine develops the power of a normal 1.6-litre engine and they say that we can expect to see this three-cylinder engine appearing in vehicles in just about every country where Ford has a presence.

The engine was developed at Ford’s technical centre in the UK and features an exhaust manifold that’s cast into the cylinder head. This arrangement lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases and that allows the engine to run with the best fuel-to-air ration across a wider rev band.

A split cooling system helps provide better fuel economy by warming the engine more quickly after a cold start.

Interestingly in a vehicle where weight is important the designers have chosen to use cast iron instead of the more usual aluminium. Cast iron was chosen because it needs 50% less energy to warm up than an aluminium engine needs.

So if you’ve got an urge to see over the top of all those city cars and you’ve just got to have a Ford badge on the grille the new Ford EcoSport might be worth waiting for … although you might have to wait a few years.
