There's a ute called the Phoenix being produced by a small company in the United States that looks promising but I doubt that it will ever make an appearance out here. These are commercial and industrial vehicles, so haven't grabbed the attention of those eagerly awaiting electric cars - but it does kinda help confirm that EVs are a well established concept rather than some new fad. The infernal combustion engine has had a good run over the past hundred years and has served us well, but the time has surely come for it to give way to something far simpler and cleaner. As a keen follower of progress in the EV field, I knew that Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and to a lesser extent some other mainstream carmakers, were working towards launching electric cars between 2009-2012, and that in the commercial vehicles field Smith EV ( http://www.smithelectricvehicles ) already had hundreds of all-electric trucks out there on highways - and are ramping up production to 10,000 a year by 2010. But this latest headline confirms that the race is on. The Subaru R1e was my previous best guess as to which fully functional highway-capable electric car would enter the showrooms first, and it might still do so - but I would not bet against Nissan/Renault beating allcomers, and in the process kickstarting the EV revolution. This is excellent news.
